Programme Overview

B.Sc. Mass Communication is a 400–level undergraduate programme offered by Iconic University. It is an interdisciplinary programme that combines elements of mass media and communication such as print, radio, television, and the internet. The program focuses on providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the various aspects of mass communication such as media theory, journalism, advertising, public relations, and digital media. It equips students with the necessary knowledge, skills, and tools to be successful in the field of media and communication.

The programme provides theoretical and practical knowledge in related areas, enabling students to face the challenges and complexities of the media industry. It also prepares them for various roles in the media industry such as a media planner, public relations executive, graphic designer, and copywriter.

Programme Objectives

The objectives of B.Sc. Mass Communication programme include but not limited to the following:

  1. Offer an undergraduate professionally oriented programme for the aspiring Nigerian communicators, journalists, public relations and advertising practitioners, broadcasters and film makers;
  2. Train and/or retrain Nigerian journalists, public relations and advertising practitioners, broadcasters and film makers for leadership positions in the mass media organisations and its adjuncts in Nigeria and the world;
  3. Instil in the mass communication students, the ability to respect deadlines and work under constant pressure;
  4. Train and encourage Nigerian mass communicators to be effective communicators by being able to think quickly, research creatively and write or broadcast concisely to the mass audience;
  5. Bridge the divergent perspectives of news gathering and dissemination;
  6. Provide the mass communication students with the opportunity to master the art of communicating with the masses that transcends all disciplines, whether in writing or broadcasting for an on-line website, newscast, or writing an executive officer (CEO), writing advertising or public relation copy to sell or promote a product to the masses;
  7. Raise and sustain the professional status of journalism in Nigeria – to produce Nigerian mass communicators who will continue to protect the basic principles of the people’s right to know as the fourth branch of government or the fourth estate of the realm;
  8. Train Nigerian media men and women that would act as the trustees of the public trust and that would be socially responsible to the communities they serve by being accurate, fair, balanced and objective in their reportage of societal issues;
  9. It is expected that at the end of the degree programme in mass communication, the mass communication graduate should be able to differentiate “soft news” from “hard news”, truth from falsehood, responsible journalism from irresponsible journalism; and
  10. Prepare the products for post-graduate studies in journalism, public relations, advertising, broadcasting and film or other cognate disciplines and speech for a company chief.

B.Sc. Mass Communication (Radio/TV Journalism & Broadcasting)

The B.Sc. Mass Communication programme with a specialization in Radio/TV Journalism and Broadcasting at Iconic University is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the media industry and its various aspects. The programme combines theoretical knowledge with practical skills to prepare students for careers in radio and television journalism, broadcasting, and production. Students will gain hands-on experience through internships and projects, allowing them to apply their knowledge in real-world settings. The curriculum also covers important topics such as media ethics, media law, and media management, ensuring that graduates are well-rounded professionals equipped to meet the challenges of the rapidly evolving media landscape. B.Sc. Mass Communication (Print & New/Digital Media Studies)

The B.Sc. Mass Communication with a specialization in Print & New/Digital Media Studies programme offered by Iconic University is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in the ever-evolving field of media. This programme provides a comprehensive understanding of traditional print media as well as the emerging digital media landscape. Students will learn about the history, theories, ethics and practical aspects of media production and consumption. Furthermore, they will gain hands-on experience in writing, editing, designing, and creating content for various print and digital platforms. With a combination of theoretical and practical learning, graduates of this programme will be well-prepared to enter the dynamic world of mass communication with a specialization in print and new/digital media studies.

B.Sc. Mass Communication (Public Relations & Advertisement)

The B.Sc. Mass Communication with specialization in Public Relations & Advertisement programme at Iconic University aims to provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge to thrive in the fast-paced world of media and communication. Through a comprehensive curriculum, this programme combines theoretical and practical approaches to equip students with a deep understanding of the theories and processes of public relations and advertising. Students will learn to create, execute, and evaluate effective communication strategies, campaigns, and advertisements for various businesses and organizations. This programme also provides students with opportunities for hands-on experience through internships and projects, preparing them for a successful career in the dynamic field of mass communication.

Admission Requirements

Entry Criteria

Admission into Iconic University for bachelor’s degree does not require JAMB result, but candidates would be asked to get a JAMB regularisation number upon successful admission in order to be used for his/her NYSC at the time of graduation.

100 Level (Freshman)

  1. Five (5) credit passes in WAEC, NECO, NBAIS, or similar bodies as recognized. The credit passes must include English Language and Mathematics and three other arts or social science subjects in not more than two sittings.
  2. Five (5) merits in NABTEB or Teachers Grade Two examinations in Science subjects. Also, the credit passes must include English Language and Mathematics.

200 Level (Sophomores)

  1. The Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) with a merit pass in English Language in addition to a credit pass in Mathematics.
  2. National Diploma (ND) or Higher National Diploma (HND) in Mass Communication from reputable institutions with a minimum of Lower Credit.
  3. GCE Advance level with at least two credit passes.
  4. OND with evidence of proficiency in English Language/Geography/Government/Civic Education.
  5. Certificate in Criminology and Security Studies or the equivalent from a recognised university in addition to three O’ Level papers in Art and Social Science, including credit pass in English Language, and Mathematics.
  6. First degree (B.Sc., B.A or B.Ed.).

Note: Only certificates recognized by the Senate of Iconic University will be granted admissions.

Admission Notice

No JAMB examination or score is required for the B.Sc. Mass Communication programme at Iconic Open University. Admitted students will only be required to register with JAMB for the regularization of their admission as Open University students.

Career opportunities in mass communication include positions in advertising, television, radio, print media, film, digital media, social media, and marketing. Individuals with a B.Sc. in Mass Communication can also find jobs in public relations, journalism, content writing, web designing, event management, and corporate communication.

Other career options include working as a media planner, media strategist, media analyst, information officer, social media manager, media researcher, public relations specialist, or broadcast producer. Those with a creative bent of mind may find employment as a screenwriter, documentary filmmaker, or scriptwriter. Those who want to pursue higher studies can opt for a master’s degree in Mass Communication which can open up even more career opportunities.

Programme Fees

Tuition and payment

Iconic University charges modest fees that gives learner the opportunity to pay registration fee per semester only. Nigerian candidates who living in Nigeria and are seeking for admission will pay an application fee of N10,000 only, other International candidates as well as Nigerians in diaspora will pay $30 or equivalent rate to the currency of the country they live.

Semester Fees:

Semester Fees for students living outside Nigeria are charged based on the human development index (HDI) of country of residence.

01Nigerians living in Nigeria only
N85,000 (payment of practical/practicum/SIWES/project courses or hardcopy course materials is exclusive)
02Anyone living in Very High Development Countries (International Students)
$500 or equivalent
03Anyone living in High Development Countries (International Students)
$400 or equivalent
04Anyone living in Medium Development Countries (International Students)
$350 or equivalent
05Anyone living in Low Development Countries (International Students)
$300 or equivalent
06Anyone living in “other countries” (International Students)
$250 or equivalent
