B.CHS. Community Health Science

B.CHS. Community Health Science is a five–year undergraduate programme which is an emerging field of medical science. The programme prepares potential healthcare professionals to tackle various health issues of communities such as immunization, primary healthcare, reproductive health, nutrition, sanitation, etc. It is designed to develop skills of public health professionals such as communication, problem–solving, critical thinking, and data analysis through classroom teaching, field trips, workshops, and hands–on experience. The programme also focuses on developing an understanding of epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, and population health. The course also equips students with essential values such as commitment to public service, advancing positive social change, basic cultural competency, service learning, and professionalism. In the case of internships, students learn about the latest trends and the different challenges and solutions for public health problems.

Programme Overview

B.CHS. Community Health Science is a five–year undergraduate programme which is an emerging field of medical science. The programme prepares potential healthcare professionals to tackle various health issues of communities such as immunization, primary healthcare, reproductive health, nutrition, sanitation, etc. It is designed to develop skills of public health professionals such as communication, problem–solving, critical thinking, and data analysis through classroom teaching, field trips, workshops, and hands–on experience. The programme also focuses on developing an understanding of epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, and population health. The course also equips students with essential values such as commitment to public service, advancing positive social change, basic cultural competency, service learning, and professionalism. In the case of internships, students learn about the latest trends and the different challenges and solutions for public health problems.

Programme Objectives

  1. To equip students with knowledge and skills required to provide comprehensive, primary health care services to individuals and families in rural and urban communities.
  2. To provide students with knowledge and skills to assess the health needs of communities, develop program goals and objectives, and implement community health interventions.
  3. To empower students to function as active members in promoting and protecting the health of individuals and families in their community.
  4. To develop critical thinking skills, problem solving abilities, and a professional attitude in students, preparing them to become successful and effective community health advocates and practitioners.
  5. To provide students with theoretical knowledge and practical experiences related to environmental, social, and economic determinants of health.
  6. To cultivate an understanding of laws and regulations related to public health practice, health disparities, advocacy, community health, and cultural competency.
  7. To gain skills to develop and evaluate health promotion & disease prevention programs, and to monitor and evaluate public health and health care services.

Admission Requirements

Entry Criteria

Admission into Iconic University of Open Learning for bachelor’s degree does not require JAMB result, but candidate will be asked to get a JAMB regularization number upon successful admission in order to be used for his/her NYSC at the time of graduation.

100 Level

Candidates seeking admission into the programme must have a certificate in Community Health (JCHEW), including five credit passes at the Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE/NECO/GCE) examinations in English Language, Mathematics, Biology or Health Science, Chemistry, Physics, or any other Science subject.

200 Level (Direct Entry)

i. Candidates seeking admission into the programme must have a diploma in Community Health (CHEW)/ND, including five credit passes at the Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE/NECO/GCE) examinations in English Language, Mathematics, Biology or Health Science, Chemistry, Physics, or any other Science subject.

ii. An acceptable first degree of minimum of second class lower in relevant field/discipline in addition to the above SSCE requirement.

300 Level (Direct Entry)

Candidates seeking admission into the programme must have a higher diploma in Community Health, HND/CHO including five credit passes at the Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE/NECO/GCE) examinations in English Language, Mathematics, Biology or Health Science, Chemistry, Physics, or any other Science subject.

Note: Candidate with CHEW/CHO certificate from 2026 must provide NYSC certificate.

Admission Notice

No JAMB examination or score is required for the B.CHS. Community Health Science programme at Iconic Open University. Admitted students will only be required to register with JAMB for the regularization of their admission as Open University students.

B.CHS. Community Health Science is one of the growing disciplines of medical field. It is a bachelor’s degree committed to enhancing the health of individuals and the community as a whole. Aspiring community health specialists can find amazing career opportunities upon completion of the degree program.

As a community health expert, one could work in hospitals, non–profit organizations, and public health departments. In these roles, one would be responsible for assessing the health needs of a specific population and designing and implementing programs to improve the quality of care. This includes educating the public concerning health issues, creating and implementing health programs, formulating health regulations, and monitoring health trends in the area.

Other roles include public health educators, nurses, social workers, epidemiologists, health counselors, program planners, and research analysts. Public health educators work to create positive health outcomes in the community through education and awareness campaigns.

Programme Fees

Tuition and payment

Iconic University charges modest fees that gives learner the opportunity to pay registration fee per semester only. Nigerian candidates who living in Nigeria and are seeking for admission will pay an application fee of N10,000 only, other International candidates as well as Nigerians in diaspora will pay $30 equivalent rate to the currency of the country they live.

Semester Fees:

Semester Fees for students living outside Nigeria are charged based on the human development index (HDI) of country of residence.

N135,000 (payment of practical/practicum/SIWES/project courses or hardcopy course materials is exclusive)
02Anyone living in Very High Development Countries (International Students)
$750 or equivalent
03Anyone living in High Development Countries (International Students)
$600 or equivalent
04Anyone living in Medium Development Countries (International Students)
$500 or equivalent
05Anyone living in Low Development Countries (International Students)
$400 or equivalent
06Anyone living in “other countries” (International Students)
$350 or equivalent
