Programme Overview

The B.Ed. Guidance and Counselling programme is a very important educational service needed in schools and communities for the optimal development of students and other people in society. Graduates of the programme will assist people of all ages to cope with their psychological challenges arising from educational, vocational or socio-personal concerns, which have great implications for individuals, families, groups, institutions and the nation at large. Graduates of the guidance and counselling programme will be equipped with the necessary skills, knowledge and attitudes to assist young people in schools to grapple with their career choice issues, academic and personal-social concerns.

Philosophy
The philosophy of Guidance and Counselling is premised on the fact that education, by its nature, is aimed at maximizing the creative potentials and skills of the individual for selffulfilment and the general development of society. Guidance and Counselling, as an important educational service, is therefore designed to help young people in schools to realize the said objectives by acquiring skills and attitudes to cope with their educational, vocational and sociopsychological challenges.

Programme Objectives

The objectives of the Bachelor of Education in Guidance and Counselling are to:
i. produce graduates that will assist students at all levels to develop skills and attitudes individually and in groups in order to solve their academic, vocational, and socialpsychological problems;
ii. enable graduates of the programme to utilize the acquired knowledge, skills, attitudes and values to assist people in non-school settings to handle their social-psychological challenges;
iii. prepare counsellors that will assist students, parents and teachers by creating career awareness and guiding them in career choices depending on individual abilities, interests and available career opportunities;
iv. equip students with skills to identify and counsel special needs persons (those with special needs, unique talents and disabilities), their parents and teachers, as well as refer those in need of special assistance to relevant professionals;
v. prepare counsellors that will assist educational curriculum planners design curricula in line with the learners’ developmental stages, special aptitudes, and the world of work.

Admission Requirements

Entry Criteria

Admission into Iconic University of Open Learning for bachelor’s degree does not require JAMB result, but candidate will be asked to get a JAMB regularization number upon successful admission in order to be used for his/her NYSC at the time of graduation.

100 Level (Freshman)

Five (5) credits pass in WAEC, NECO, NBAIS, or similar bodies as recognized. The credit passes must include English Language, and Mathematics and any other 3 subjects, at not more than two sittings.
Five (5) merits in NABTEB or Teachers Grade Two examinations in Science subjects. Also, the credit passes must include English Language, and Mathematics and any other 3 subjects.

200 Level (Sophomores)

The Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) with a merit pass in English Language in addition to a credit pass in Mathematics/Computer/Physics/Biology/Chemistry.
National Diploma (ND) or Higher National Diploma (HND) in Physics/Computer/Mathematics/Statistics/Information Technology/Software Engineering/Data Science/Artificial Intelligence from reputable institutions with a minimum of Lower Credit.
GCE Advance level with at least two credit passes.
OND with evidence of proficiency in Physics/Computer Science/Mathematics/Statistics/Information Technology/Software Engineering/Data Science/Artificial Intelligence.
Certificate in Information Technology/Computer Science or the equivalent from a recognized University in addition to three O’ Level papers in Sciences, including credit pass in English Language, and Mathematics.
First degree (B.Sc./B.Ed.) in Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Chemistry, Biology and any other B.Ed. degree.

Note: Only certificates recognized by the Senate of Iconic University will be granted admissions.

Programme Fees

Tuition and payment

Iconic University charges modest fees that give learners the chance to pay per semester only. Nigerian candidates seeking admission will pay an application fee of N10,000 and $30 would be paid by international applicants.

Semester Fees:

Semester Fees are charged based on the human development index (HDI) of country of residence.

Fees are categorised into:

01Nigerians living in Nigeria only: N85,000 (payment of practical/practicum/SIWES/project courses or hardcopy course materials is exclusive)
02Anyone living in Very High Development Countries (International Students): $600
03Anyone living in High Development Countries (International Students): $500
04Anyone living in Medium Development Countries (International Students): $400
05Anyone living in Low Development Countries (International Students): $350
06Anyone living in “Other countries” (International Students): $350
