Overview

About this department

The Department of Mass Communication at Iconic Open University is a dynamic academic unit dedicated to training ethical, versatile, and innovative communication professionals through flexible, technology-driven learning. As part of the Faculty of Management, Social, & Media Sciences, the Department offers the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Mass Communication at the undergraduate level, with three new specializations approved by the University Senate in alignment with the National Universities Commission’s Curriculum for Communication and Media Studies (NUC-CCMAS).

These specializations include Radio/TV Journalism & Broadcasting, Print and New/Digital Media Studies, and Public Relations & Advertisement, designed to equip students with in-depth knowledge and practical skills in their chosen areas of focus. The Department is committed to producing skilled journalists, broadcasters, public relations practitioners, advertisers, and digital media professionals through innovative teaching, cutting-edge research, and hands-on training, with a focus on transforming lives through technology and shaping public discourse. In line with the university’s open distance and e-learning model, the Department ensures students receive rigorous, industry-relevant training while balancing their studies with professional and personal commitments.

With a vision to lead in media and communication education, the Department prepares graduates to excel in various sectors, including broadcast and print media, public relations agencies, advertising firms, digital media companies, corporate communication departments, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations, contributing to informed societies and democratic governance across Nigeria and beyond.
