The Department of Health Information Management at Iconic Open University is an innovative academic unit dedicated to producing highly skilled professionals who manage, secure, and utilize healthcare data to improve health service delivery through flexible, technology-driven learning. As part of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, the Department offers programmes including the B.HIM. Health Information Management designed to equip students with the competencies required to effectively manage health information systems, ensure data accuracy and security, and support evidence-based decision-making in healthcare institutions.
The Department is committed to producing competent health information managers, medical records officers, health data analysts, and health informatics specialists through innovative teaching, cutting-edge research, and practical training, with a focus on transforming lives through technology and strengthening Nigeria’s health information systems. In line with the university’s open distance and e-learning model, the Department ensures students receive rigorous, industry-relevant training while balancing their studies with professional and personal commitments.
Demonstrating its commitment to academic excellence, the Department actively engages with professional and regulatory bodies such as the Health Records Officers Registration Board of Nigeria (HRORBN) to secure accreditation for its programmes, ensuring graduates meet national standards and are eligible for professional certification. With a vision to lead in health information management education, the Department prepares graduates to excel in various sectors, including hospitals and healthcare facilities, government health ministries and agencies, health maintenance organizations (HMOs), research institutions, public health organizations, and international health agencies, driving data-driven healthcare improvement and quality patient care across Nigeria and beyond.
